INTERPLANETARY PROJECT

How best to inspire people to take on a gigantic optimistic challenge? I am fairly sure there is no best answer to that question, but at SFI we are trying. Scholarly work can so often feel removed from the excitement of art and narrative and gaming. How best to connect our dreams of possible life, outer space, and the promise of other worlds, all domains where the imagination is set free, to the serious business of rigorous research? This was the genesis of the InterPlanetary Project.

The InterPlanetary Project is part festival, part community, and part technology. It wants to engage with the pressing problems of today by imagining the challenges of tomorrow. Mark Twain wrote, “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus,” and we conceived of the InterPlanetary Project to restore focus at a planetary scale. I know it sounds a little crazy but it is more important that it sounds fun and that the fun has at its foundation the science of the future.

The InterPlanetary crew have worked very hard to make this project an easy delight. See here.
